MITZVAH OF THE MONTH JANUARY

005

On the weekend of Saturday, February 29 - Sunday, March 1, Temple Israel will be participating in a community wide initiative called Community for ALL, an Interfaith Disability Inclusion Weekend. As a unified, interfaith effort among faith communities and disability service providers, we join this effort to raise awareness and foster acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities and those who love them.

At Temple Israel we believe that all people should feel welcome and included in our worship time, classes, volunteer efforts and leadership opportunities.

We will be celebrating this Shabbat in a couple of ways. Claudia Mazur, from the Faith Inclusion Network, will be our guess speaker at Shabbat services on February 29th. We are also constructing a poster that will be displayed on this Shabbat during our Disability Awareness, Acceptance and Inclusion Shabbat, and posted on the Faith Inclusion Network's "Community For ALL" Facebook page. WE WOULD LIKE ALL TEMPLE ISRAEL MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE.

We're asking everyone to personalize a Paper "Person" Puzzle Piece that will then be used to make our Temple Israel poster (designed by Bobbie Fisher). The poster will reflect the diversity of Temple Israel, but also our connectivity, inclusion and acceptance of all. Everyone is a piece of the Temple Israel Family puzzle that fits together in such a wonderful way.

Please pick up a puzzle piece at the synagogue (in the back of the sanctuary, in the Minyan Room, or at the office) and return them to the office by February 14th. Then come to Shabbat services on February 29th to see the finished poster and hear our guest speaker.

We hope to see you all on February 29th!

NEXT BRITH SHOLOM MEETING

Brith Sholom’s next general membership meeting will be Sunday, February 2, at 11 am in the Beth Sholom Village. Lauren “The Frugal Chick” will be telling us how to save money with coupons. Brunch follows - $5 per member; $7 at the door; $10 per guest; and free to anyone exploring membership. For more information, contact LeeAnne Mallory at 757-461-1150 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AVAILABLE AT TEMPLE ISRAEL

Parents and Grandparents:

Did you know that Scholarship Funds are available at Temple Israel that can be used for Jewish Education, Jewish camps, trips to Israel and other Jewish Experiential programs? Think:

  • Simon Family JCC (or any Jewish) summer camp
  • BBYO and USY conventions and summer programs
  • college winter and spring break trips with a Jewish focus
  • even partial tuition reimbursement for a Jewish college course!

And some of the grants are now available for any age, INCLUDING adults! These funds include the Alfred and Herbert Legum Memorial Fund, the Sanford Lefcoe Scholarship Fund and the Snyder Educational Fund. Needs basis is given first priority. If interested in applying for a grant, please contact the synagogue office at 489-4550.

minyan

Our morning minyan and Friday night minyan could use your help!

A number of our regulars are unable to attend due to illness, and some mornings we are not able to make 10 people. It's particularly important on Mondays and Thursdays when we read Torah, but there are people every day who need to say kaddish. We have also had a problem for the past couple of weeks making a minyan on Friday evenings. Please look at your schedule and pick one morning a week to come to our 7:30am minyan - it's only 30 - 60 minutes and you will be doing a mitzvah by allowing people the opportunity to say kaddish for a loved one. If you can't make the morning minyan, please come on a Friday evening at 5:30.

If you would like to be a shomer, please give the office a call so we can add you to the list. Shomrim sit with a deceased after they have been shrouded and before the funeral so that they are never alone. If you would like more information, please give the office a call at 489-4550.

LADIES, PLEASE DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR OLD MASCARA - BRING IT TO OUR OFFICE SO WE CAN CLEAN THE BRUSHES AND PASS IT ALONG TO THE WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR WHO WILL USE THEM TO CLEAN THE BABY ANIMALS SHE GETS. SHE CAN ALSO USE PUPPY PIDDLE PADS AND 75 WATT INFRARED LIGHT BULBS.

WE WILL COLLECT THESE ITEMS ALL YEAR, SO PLEASE DROP THEM OFF AT THE OFFICE.

The next time you're at the synagogue, be sure to look at our Pet Memorial Board.
It's located on the stair wall as you go up to Brody Auditorium.
It's a wonderful way to remember your beloved pet.

The Men's Chevra Kaddisha is looking for volunteers.

Participating on the Chevra Kaddisha is the highest form of a mitzvah you can perform. You are the last contact the deceased has before the funeral and you are the one who ensures they have a proper Jewish burial. It is one of the most rewarding acts you will ever do. If you are interested, or have questions, please contact Larry Stein.
