Ghent’s Winter Sheltering Project

To our Temple Israel Family -

For our next Mitzvah of the Month, we will be participating in Ghent’s Winter Sheltering project, which will be starting in a few weeks.  This will be our mitzvah project for December - February.

Temple Israel and the Urban Renewal Center have set up an Amazon Wish List through which you may order items that will be sent directly to Temple Israel. The link is:

(When you go to checkout, you can add the Temple Israel address and have the items sent to us, or you can click on "Rachel Cropper's Gift Registry" and the items will be sent directly to the Urban Renewal Center (her address will not show up.)  If you send them directly to the Urban Renewal Center, please indicate somewhere that the items are from Temple Israel.)

If you prefer, you may purchase items and bring them to Temple Israel, or you may mail a check to Temple Israel to provide food, clothing, hygiene products, etc. for those in need. Please make the check payable to Temple Israel with a notation that it is for the Homeless Project and mail it to Temple Israel, 7255 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA, 23505.
If you want to help serve dinner and/or volunteer at one of the churches that will be housing the homeless overnight from December 17 through March 3rd, contact Rachel Cropper at This email address is being protected from spambots. ✨NEW MELTON COURSE - Press Pause, Rest Assured
WEDNESDAYS @2PM, BEGINS OCTOBER 11 • TEMPLE EMANUEL

The Jewish approach to mindfulness and self-care traces back to the roots of creation. The concept of a week comes from the Jewish marking of six days of work and one day of rest. For six days each week, we actively interact with the world. On the seventh, we reflect on our actions. We pause, rest, reflect and reboot. In this unit, we will explore Shabbat and the role of time in Judaism. Along with other prescribed Jewish practices that ask us to pause, reflect and refrain from business as usual. Together, we will reflect on the practices that allow us to start anew, week after week, and year after year. JewishVA.org/Melton to register. Use code “60FY24” to receive $60 off.
