What’s happening at Temple Israel this week… and beyond.

Please join us on July 29th for the baby naming of Ziva Liora Panitz, daughter of Morris Benjamin and Elana Panitz, granddaughter of Rabbi Michael and Sheila Panitz and Yosi and Susie Havusha, niece of Emily and Zeke Panitz and Luli Esteves and cousin of Marina and Joachim Panitz.
It’s that time of year again when we start to think about our
night out! This year, we will meet at Harbor Park on Wednesday, August 23rd. The game begins at 7:05pm, but get there early to schmooz with your Temple Israel friends.
If you have any unused tickets, please send them/leave them in the office by Monday, August 21st, so they can be exchanged for tickets for the August 23rd game. This is a free evening for you – just come out and have a great time!

Saturday – 9:30am in Brody Auditorium.

Going forward, there will be NO Saturday evening services. Minchah will be held immediately following kiddush lunch.

Sunday – 8:00am at Beth El and 5:45pm at Temple Israel

7:30am at Temple Israel and 5:45pm at Temple Israel
(Evening minyan is at Temple Israel for the month of July.)

Drop off gently used PAPERBACK books on the atrium or at the temple office this summer, and we will send the books to the Norfolk City Jail for their inmates.

Are you interested in converting to Judaism, or know someone who is? Rabbi Panitz is meeting with students on Fridays at 10:00am and Sundays at 10:15am. Please contact Rabbi Panitz for a specific summer schedule.
We have started something new at our kiddush luncheons on Shabbat. If you see someone with a red cup, that means they are a new member, or are visiting, so please go up to them and introduce yourself and help them feel at home.
The Men’s Chevra Kaddisha is looking for volunteers. Participating on the Chevra Kaddisha is the highest form of a mitzvah you can perform. You are the last contact the deceased has before the funeral and you are the one who ensures they have a proper Jewish burial. It is one of the most rewarding acts you will ever do. If you are interested, or have questions, please contact Larry Stein.
PREACHIN’ AND TEACHIN’

Rabbi Panitz will continue the annual tradition of preaching and teaching at Talbot Park Baptist Church, 6919 Granby Street, Norfolk on August 20th at 9:30am. He will be speaking on the theme of environmental stewardship.

MITZVAH OF THE YEAR
Temple Israel has joined with the United Way of South Hampton Roads in a new program called Mission United. This program will assemble “move-in kits” for qualified homeless people who are transitioning to apartments. The items we have been tasked with collecting are linens. We will collect new/gently used twin and full sized bed sheets, blankets and comforters, as well as towels and washcloths.
Please bring your donations to the synagogue office.
Thank you for your help with this most worthy project!
